When it comes to staying active during the winter months (or during quarantine), it’s not always possible to head outside to work out. If you’re struggling to stay active during cold and rainy days, indoor exercises are the best solution for you. Whether you have a comprehensive home gym or just a mat and some weights, GGblue has a few exercises that will keep you on track throughout the winter. Check out our favorite at-home exercise ideas here.
1. Yoga
Yoga is an amazing option for indoor exercise. You don’t need much more than a yoga mat and a Youtube video! There are some amazing instructional videos online where a virtual teacher will guide you through an entire class. You can search for relaxing yoga classes or challenging videos to find the perfect difficulty for your level of experience and fitness.
The best thing about yoga is that it includes a focus on the mind as well as the body, so it can help lift your mood and keep you positive. Meditating is a great tool to beat the winter blues or maintain your mental health when you’re stuck inside.
2. Body Weight Exercises
...no weights needed! While stretching and meditation are great, you want to strengthen your body, too. There is evidence that strength training can help prevent osteoporosis, boost your immune system, and prevent injuries when participating in other sports. Some of our favorite indoor strength training exercises make working out a breeze! With just a few sets and reps, you can be done in as little as thirty minutes. Try doing three sets of this routine:
- 20 Jumping Jacks
- 15 Squats
- 10 Lunges on Each Leg
- 10 Pushups
- 20 Seconds Mountain Climbers
- 30 Second Air Swim
Rest when you need to, but get your heart pumping!
3. Stairs
Stairs are the perfect solution for someone who wants an indoor exercise that challenges their strength and cardio at the same time. Feel your quads and calves burn as you push your heart rate. Not every house has stairs, but if there’s an office building or mall near you, you can head there to go up and down the stairs — staying inside the whole time. We love buildings between five and seven floors because it’s challenging to get to the top, but you get a break while heading back down before you start climbing all over again.
4. Video Game Workouts
With the advance of technology, there are now so many sources for new forms of exercise. If you easily get bored with the same routine, gamify your indoor exercise time with fitness games on the Nintendo Wii, Switch, or other motion-controlled consoles.
